I am standing up to cancer with Canteen
My name is Sophie Trimble and I'm captain for
my school wheelbarrow race team the Mareeba State High School Bitumen Bandits.
We are a team of 10 young students in our last year of school and we have
decided to put our bodies through harm and partake in the Great Wheelbarrow
Race pushing a wheelbarrow 140km over 3 days from Mareeba to Chillagoe. We run up
and down hills (mainly up), across dirt road, with blisters, aches and pains
all for fun and for charity. We have
chosen to raise money for Canteen. This
makes sense to us as we are teenagers and Canteen not only aids teens with
cancer, but to teens who have family members that suffer from cancer.
The Great Wheelbarrow Race https://www.greatwheelbarrowrace.com/ is a tribute to our pioneers who in the 1800s
used to push barrows filled with their possessions from one place to the
next. This is now a massive event for
our community attracting thousands of people from all over the state and
country. The idea behind this madness is
to raise money for charity, this race has raised millions of dollars for heaps
of charities over the years. https://www.facebook.com/Great-Wheelbarrow-Race-176027939110881/
